homegrown hot takes pt. II

see it like a local: little brother, Luke’s take

Our little brother Luke wasn’t about to miss out on fun—he’s dropping his Gen-Z-approved 3-day itinerary for the Burg below.

Day 1 - getting settled

You’ve got to hit Pierce’s BBQ for dinner. You don’t have to take our word for it - it was voted South’s Best by Southern Living. Laid back counter service style - Pierce’s has been serving bbq since 1971 and is a beloved local spot. They’re still dressing the pork in Doc’s original sauce, too, a sweet and tangy blend of tomato and vinegar.

After dinner take a stroll down Duke of Gloucester in CW.

Day 2 - explore

Take a scenic drive down Route 5 to Shirley Plantation. Shirley Plantation is an estate on the north bank of the James River. The plantation was founded in 1613 and has been continuously owned by the Hill-Carter family since 1638. The plantation offers a unique glimpse into colonial Virginia life and the history of the region.

Make your way over to Upper Shirley Vineyard for lunch and a wine tasting. The views? Chef’s kiss. Whether you're on their expansive patio or lounging in Adirondack chairs on the lawn you’ll be overlooking a gorgeous curve of the James River - perfect for the vibes and the photo dump.

if wine is not your thing…

York River State Park is a great place to enjoy the day. York River State Park is home to over 40 miles of hiking, mountain biking and equestrian trails allow visitors to explore the marsh, river shoreline and forests. Kayaking is my personal favorite. Check out their Trail Guide for more information.

Day 3 - before you get on the road

You can’t leave Williamsburg without a visit to Five Forks Cafe. Five Forks has been a locals staple for over 20 years. A classic, small roadside diner, where the staff will treat you like family. My go to order is corn beef hash and a stack of pancakes.

Ask for Lori and tell her the Schiavone’s sent you!
