What we'd do in Williamsburg, Virginia this weekend: October 9–11, 2026

William & Mary is on fall break from October 8 to 11, Saturday looks dry and mild, and Sunday looks like a washout, so put your outdoor plans on Saturday. The best things to do in Williamsburg, Virginia this weekend are the Saturday farmers market on Duke of Gloucester Street (8 a.m. to noon), a slow bike ride through the Historic Area, a candlelit ghost walk after dark, and a rain-proof Sunday split between the free Art Museums and a booked Copper Fox Distillery tour. This guide covers Williamsburg, Virginia, home of Colonial Williamsburg and W&M. If you were looking for Brooklyn, this isn't your page.

Key takeaways

  • Saturday morning anchor: The Williamsburg Farmers Market runs 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, October 10, on Duke of Gloucester Street.
  • Best free plan: Visit the Art Museums, which have had free general admission since 2025, and stroll the Historic Area streets.
  • Book ahead: Reserve Haunted Williamsburg tickets, Copper Fox tour slots and Saturday dinner.
  • Rain plan: Sunday's forecast is a 100% chance of rain, so plan indoor options for that day.
  • Base camp: Rochambeau offers free parking outside your door and complimentary bikes for the ten-minute ride to the Historic Area.

What we'd do in Williamsburg this weekend: our 10 picks

These picks are ordered the way the weekend runs: outdoor plans first while the weather holds, then the indoor ones for when it doesn't.

1. Start at Rochambeau: firepit Friday, bikes Saturday

Pull in off Capitol Landing Road on Friday evening and park directly outside your room. Check-in is contactless, so a late arrival after the I-64 crawl is no trouble. Firewood at the firepit is free, s'mores kits are sold in the lobby, and the Friday low of around 61°F is good sitting-outside weather.

On Saturday morning, take one of the complimentary guest bikes and ride ten minutes into Colonial Williamsburg. The bikes go out against an electronically signed waiver.

Back in the room, you'll find:

The building is a 22-room roadside motor inn, built in 1952 and restored by its independent owners. More on Williamsburg hotel amenities.

Need to know:

  • When: Friday evening onward
  • Where: 929 Capitol Landing Road
  • Cost: included for guests (s'mores kits extra)
  • Weather: outdoor

2. Williamsburg Farmers Market, Saturday morning

The market runs 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, October 10. It sets up on the second block of Duke of Gloucester Street and in the P4 lot between Henry and Nassau streets.

According to the City of Williamsburg, about 40 local vendors usually turn up, selling produce, prepared foods and Virginia-made goods. Our local opinion: get there early and bike in instead of hunting for a parking spot. If you're bringing a dog, check the city's market page for its pet rules first.

3. Bassett Trace Nature Trail guided walk

Colonial Williamsburg Master Naturalist volunteers lead this walk, which is about half a mile round trip. It starts from the trailhead in the Griffin Hotel's Gold Wing parking lot (CW).

A few things to plan for:

  • Conditions: the terrain is rough and there are bugs, so wear proper shoes and leave the stroller behind.
  • Rules: the walk runs weather permitting, space is limited, and children must be with an adult.
  • Timing: check CW's calendar for this weekend's slots. Saturday is the better weather day if a walk is scheduled.
  • Going further: afterward you can continue on the 1.4-mile trail to the Green Course Clubhouse.

4. Ride or wander the Historic Area

You can wander the streets, but you'll need a ticket for the Foundation's flagged buildings and programs. CW's ticket guide explains which ticket covers what.

  • Single-day admission: CW set its 2025 single-day adult ticket price at $35. Youth tickets cost $10, and children under 6 get in free (CW pricing). Check current pricing before purchase.
  • Busch Gardens too: the Fall Bounce ticket covers both the Historic Area and Busch Gardens, and it's valid through November 10, 2026.

Saturday's dry, 73-degree forecast makes it the day to go.

5. Fall Foliage Adventure Race: watch it

The Fall Foliage Adventure Race takes place at 2205 Jamestown Road on Saturday. The 15-hour course starts at 8 a.m. and the 5-hour course at 9 a.m.

Every option is full, with only waitlists open, and registration closes Friday at 11:59 p.m. Non-racers can watch, take pictures, picnic or fish at the park, but they can't help participants.

6. Waller Mill Park

Waller Mill Park covers 2,705 acres around a 360-acre lake that opened in 1972. Through November 1, it's open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The park has:

  • wooded and asphalt trails
  • an 18-hole disc golf course
  • a dog park, a playground and a fishing pier
  • kayak, canoe, pedal boat and jon boat rentals at the Boat House Store

Move Waller Mill to Saturday afternoon, because Sunday's rain will make for a wet outdoor day.

7. Haunted Williamsburg after dark

Haunted Williamsburg is a one-hour, candlelit walk that starts at the Market House.

  • Ages: 8 and up, and children must be with an adult. Younger kids can do the Official Ghost Walk Junior instead.
  • Tickets: you'll need an event ticket.
  • Rain: it runs rain or shine, except in severe weather.
  • Pets and access: no pets, and the route isn't ADA accessible.

Friday night and Saturday evening both look dry, so check the current schedule and book a walk while the weather holds.

8. A tasting at Copper Fox Distillery

Copper Fox's Williamsburg distillery is open:

  • noon to 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday
  • noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday

Tours run at 1 and 3 p.m. from Friday through Sunday. They cost $10 and are free for kids 12 and under. You have to book a tour, but tasting room seats are first come, first served. Leashed, well-behaved dogs are welcome in the tasting areas. Pick a designated driver before you go.

9. The Art Museums on a wet Sunday

General admission to Colonial Williamsburg's Art Museums has been free since January 2025. Programs in the Hennage Auditorium may need a ticket. Spend Sunday's rain among the folk art and decorative arts collections, then go for a long lunch.

10. Yorktown, Rochambeau's road

The inn takes its name from Comte de Rochambeau, whose French forces joined George Washington's Continental Army on the road to victory at Yorktown in 1781.

If the rain lets up on Sunday, or if you're staying through Monday, drive over and see where that story ended. Check the National Park Service and the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation for this weekend's hours and fees.

Yorktown's big celebration comes the following weekend:

Pick your weekend by who's coming

Different groups want different weekends. Here's how we'd split the picks.

W&M fall break families

The undergraduate calendar lists fall break as October 8–11, and classes resume Monday, October 12. Law students are on a different schedule, with a break of October 10–13.

Our plan:

  • Saturday morning: breakfast at the market.
  • Saturday midday: bike through the Historic Area to campus, about two miles from the inn.
  • Saturday night: sit around the firepit with your student before they head back to class.

For room, look at the Family Suite, which sleeps five, or the Bunks room, which sleeps four.

Adults and couples

Spend Saturday afternoon at Copper Fox, then book dinner and finish with Haunted Williamsburg.

For something louder, Busch Gardens' Howl-O-Scream runs Friday through Sunday from 6 p.m. to close and is included with park admission. Save it for the grown-ups.

Families with younger kids

  • Saturday morning: start with the market.
  • Saturday midday: if your kids can handle rough ground, add the Bassett Trace walk if one is scheduled. Otherwise, take them to the Waller Mill playground and fishing pier.
  • Saturday evening: do the Ghost Walk Junior instead of the full tour.
  • Sunday: spend the rain at the Art Museums.

Bringing the dog

  • Where your dog can stay: at Rochambeau, dogs stay only in the Classic Double, for a flat $75 per dog.
  • Dog-friendly stops: Waller Mill has a dog park, and Copper Fox welcomes leashed dogs in its tasting areas.
  • Where they can't go: dogs aren't allowed on Haunted Williamsburg.

Free things to do in Williamsburg this weekend

Free admission doesn't always come with free parking. Biking in from Rochambeau avoids that problem.

  • Always free: a stroll along Duke of Gloucester Street and through Merchants Square.
  • Free this weekend: browsing the Williamsburg Farmers Market, 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday.
  • Always free: general admission to the Art Museums.
  • Always free: the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry. It runs around the clock, and the crossing takes about 20 minutes. Call 1-800-823-3779 for delays.
  • Free with a ticket: watching the Fall Foliage Adventure Race from the park.

If it rains: the backup plan

Sunday will be wet. Book indoor options before you arrive.

Where to stay for a weekend like this

Rochambeau works best for a weekend like this one: you park once, bike into town, sleep the whole family without an air mattress, and finish the night at the firepit. Our rooms include:

  • Family Suite: a bunk room and a king room connected by an interior passage, each with its own bathroom.
  • Bunks: sleeps four, with a queen below and a full above.
  • General's Quarters: 470 square feet, a private patio and a kitchenette, with a two-night minimum.

If you want a restaurant and full hotel services under one roof, we aren't the right fit. Look through the Williamsburg hotel gallery, read guest reviews from Williamsburg stays, then stay near Colonial Williamsburg. For more ideas, see our Williamsburg weekend inspiration.
