One room, the whole crew: our family suites in Williamsburg

One room, the whole crew: our family suites in Williamsburg

The kids are asleep in the bunks, the passage between the rooms has gone quiet, and the adults have time for one more drink by the firepit before calling it a night. Rochambeau's Family Suite is two internally connected rooms: a king room and a custom-built bunk room, each with its own en-suite bathroom. It covers 465 square feet, sleeps up to five, and sits inside a 22-room independently owned inn on Capitol Landing Road with free parking at the door and complimentary bikes. Below you'll find who sleeps where, how the suite compares with other Williamsburg family stays, the 1954 motel behind it, and the trips where another property suits you better.

Key takeaways

The Family Suite is built for families who want separate sleeping space without splitting up. The essentials:

  • Two rooms connect through an interior passage, and each has its own en-suite bathroom.
  • One room has a king bed. The other has a custom-built bunk with a queen mattress below and a full above.
  • The suite is 465 square feet and sleeps up to five guests.
  • The connection is built in, so you don't have to request two adjacent rooms and hope they line up.
  • Free self-parking is at the front door, and check-in is contactless by text code.
  • Complimentary bikes and an outdoor firepit fill the hours between bigger Williamsburg plans.
  • If you need an indoor pool, a full kitchen or a daily hot breakfast, compare other properties.

Why families keep coming back to Williamsburg

Williamsburg packs a lot of family trip into a small radius. The Historic Area fills a long morning. Busch Gardens Williamsburg and, in summer, Water Country USA take care of the theme-park days. Jamestown and Yorktown cover the rest of the Historic Triangle, and the Virginia Capital Trail starts at Jamestown for families who would rather ride than queue. Most families find one trip isn't enough, and they come back as the kids get older and the list changes.

Where you stay shapes how those days feel. At a roadside inn, the car parks outside your door, so unloading coolers, strollers and sleeping children takes one trip instead of three. The bikes are right outside. The evening ends at the fire instead of in a hallway.

The rooms pair the original roadside layout with tiled walk-in showers, mattresses locally handcrafted in Norfolk by Paramount Sleep, and custom-built bunks.

You can read guest reviews before booking.

Inside the Family Suite: who sleeps where

The adults sleep in the king room. The kids, or a second set of guests, take the bunk room. An interior passage links the two rooms, and each side has its own en-suite bathroom, so bedtime and the morning shower rush happen in parallel rather than in a line.

The layout, room by room

Feature Family Suite
Rooms Two, internally connected through an interior passage
Bathrooms Two en-suite bathrooms, one per room
Adult room King bed
Second room Hand-crafted bunk: queen mattress below, full-size mattress above
Sleeps Up to five guests
Size 465 square feet
Shower Tiled walk-in shower
Food and drink Mini fridge
In-room essentials High-speed Wi-Fi, 32-inch smart TV, individually controlled heating and air conditioning, ceiling fan, hair dryer, in-room safe

The inn has two Family Suites in total, which is part of why they are worth booking early. To see the other room types side by side, look at our family-friendly rooms in Williamsburg, or browse the Rochambeau gallery for the finishes.

Why bunks beat a sleeper sofa for most families

A sleeper sofa has to be made up every night and folded away every morning. While it's open, it fills the living space it was meant to provide. A bunk is a bed: it's ready at 9 p.m., the kids can claim levels on arrival, and nobody negotiates cushions. In the Family Suite the bunks have their own room, their own bathroom and walls between them and the adults.

Family Suite reality check: Before you book any Williamsburg suite, ask whether "suite" means a separate room with a door or one larger room with a sofa bed.

Who the Family Suite suits, and who it doesn't

Good fit Consider another room
Families of four or five who want the kids in their own room Groups of six or more
Grandparents in the king room with parents and kids in the bunk room Anyone who can't use a top bunk, unless the lower queen covers them
William & Mary visitors bringing siblings Guests who need accessible-room features: book the Accessible King Room, which has a roll-in shower, grab bars and a roll-under sink
Small groups of friends happy with bunks Travelers bringing a dog

What to confirm before booking

Run through this list before you book:

  • Ask about cribs or pack-and-plays if you're traveling with an infant.
  • Check-in is 4 p.m. Early check-in from 2 p.m. is available for a fee, subject to availability.
  • Check-out is 11 a.m. Late check-out until 1 p.m. is available for a fee, subject to availability.
  • Cancel at least 72 hours before arrival for a full refund. Inside 72 hours, you're charged one night plus taxes. Holiday weekends, special events and peak dates may have different terms, which are shown at booking.
  • The Family Suite is not dog-eligible. Dogs stay only in Classic Double rooms, at $75 per dog per stay, with a maximum of two dogs. Review our pet policy.

Check Family Suite Availability

One suite vs. two rooms: what a family of four should compare

Price the Family Suite against two separate rooms for your exact dates. Don't assume the bigger option costs more. Rates change by date, so the useful comparison is the total at checkout, taxes included, alongside what each option actually gives you.

Two adults, two kids Family Suite Two standard rooms One Classic Double
Rooms connected Yes, built in Not guaranteed Single room
Bathrooms Two Two One
Beds King, plus bunk with queen and full Depends on room types Two full beds
Adult privacy Separate room Separate room Shared room
Dogs allowed No Only if one is a Classic Double Yes, $75 per dog per stay
Parking Free, at the door Free, at the door Free, at the door

Two rooms can be the better choice for two couples traveling together, or for anyone who wants full separation rather than a shared passage. A family of four on a tight budget who doesn't mind one bathroom can fit in a Classic Double. For everyone else, the suite gives you the separate rooms without relying on a room assignment to keep you together.

The base camp part: what happens between the big days

Rochambeau isn't a resort, and it doesn't try to be one. What it offers are the small supports that make a family weekend run smoothly: bikes for the morning, a firepit for the evening, parking at the door, coffee and a light continental breakfast on weekend mornings, and a check-in process that still works when you roll in after dinner. See all the amenities for a comfortable family stay.

Bikes out the door, Colonial Williamsburg up the road

Complimentary bicycles are available for guest use. From Capitol Landing Road, the gateway to Colonial Williamsburg, the Historic Area is close enough to ride. That means the car stays put while you're in town and nobody circles for parking near Merchants Square. If the family wants a longer ride, the Virginia Capital Trail begins at Jamestown and runs roughly 52 paved miles toward Richmond. There's a route idea in our guide to bike the Capital Trail during your family trip.

Firepits and s'mores after dark

The outdoor firepit is where nothing is on the schedule. After a day of cobblestones or roller coasters, kids can be loud there and adults can sit. S'mores kits are sold in the lobby, and you can add them before arrival so they're waiting.

Park once, check in from your phone

This is where the old roadside layout pays off. Free self-parking sits at the front door, so luggage, car seats and a sleeping toddler cover a few steps instead of a lobby, an elevator and a corridor. The property also has two Level 2 EV chargers.

Check-in is contactless. You complete a digital registration form, and on arrival day you receive a text with a four-digit room code. There's no app, no key and no desk to queue at. If you need anything after hours, text (757) 290-8969 and an on-call team member will respond. To check out, close the door behind you.

Williamsburg family stays compared

The real question isn't whether a property calls a room a suite. It's whether everyone has a real bed and whether the adults get a door. Here is how the layouts and the features families ask about most line up.

Property Sleeping setup Kids' beds Pool Breakfast Kitchen
The Rochambeau Roadside Inn Two connected rooms, two bathrooms Bunk: queen below, full above Not listed Light continental and coffee, Sat and Sun Mini fridge

When Rochambeau is the wrong fit, and where to go instead

Be honest about what your trip needs, and book accordingly:

  • An indoor pool is non-negotiable: compare properties that list indoor pools for your dates, including Homewood Suites and the Historic Powhatan.
  • You plan to cook most meals: look at the Historic Powhatan. If a kitchenette is enough, our General's Quarters is a 470-square-foot one-bedroom suite with a kitchenette, a private patio and a fold-down queen sofa. It sleeps four and has a two-night minimum.
  • Six or more people in one unit: compare larger villa-style accommodations, including the Historic Powhatan.
  • A daily included breakfast: Woodlands lists daily enhanced continental breakfast. Ours runs on weekends only.
  • Accessible-room features: book our Accessible King Room rather than the Family Suite.

If what you want is bunks, bikes, a fire and two connected rooms with their own bathrooms, that's the trip we built the Family Suite for.

A roadside inn with Williamsburg history in its name

Construction on Motel Rochambeau began in 1952, and its first documented guest checked in in 1954. Lyle Schiavone closed on the property in January 2024, and the phased reopening began that December. The name recalls the Comte de Rochambeau, whose French forces marched with Washington's Continental Army through Williamsburg on the way to Yorktown in 1781.

From the Bryhn family to Motel Rochambeau, 1952 to 1954

The story starts with George A. Bryhn, who bought the vacant land in the 1930s. He paid for it with proceeds from selling his Duke of Gloucester Street home to the Rockefellers, who were funding the preservation of Colonial Williamsburg. In 1952, George A. and his son George W. Bryhn began building the motel. By 1954 it was open: George W. and his wife Susan ran it, and a room cost $4.00 a night. The motel stayed in the Bryhn family for seven decades. In 2023, Barbara, Becky and David Bryhn agreed to sell it to Lyle, a Williamsburg native.

The Comte de Rochambeau and the road to Yorktown, 1781

Jean-Baptiste Donatien de Vimeur, Comte de Rochambeau, commanded the French expeditionary army allied with Washington. The National Park Service places Washington and Rochambeau in Williamsburg in mid-September 1781. The allied armies gathered there and set out for Yorktown on September 28. The British surrendered on October 19, 1781, and afterward the French army wintered in Yorktown and Williamsburg. For families, that makes Yorktown a natural day trip from an inn that carries the general's name.

The 2024 restoration: keeping the character, fixing the rest

Lyle closed on the property with local investors in January 2024. His sister, Anna Schiavone, had joined as Creative Director in October 2023. Demolition began in March and major restoration in early May. The first 11 rooms and a new front lobby opened in December 2024, and a second building with 11 more rooms opened in February 2025, bringing the inn to 22 rooms.

The restoration kept the roadside layout and the door-front parking. It replaced what had worn out, adding tiled walk-in showers, Paramount Sleep mattresses and custom-built bunks. As Anna puts it, "We are rooted in the nature and history that surrounds us." Learn the story behind Rochambeau.

Build a Williamsburg weekend around the Family Suite

The two-bathroom setup earns its keep on mornings with a hard start time, and the firepit earns its keep on nights after a long day. Here are three ways to shape two days. For more, see our guide to things to do with the family in Williamsburg, VA.

The Colonial Williamsburg weekend: bikes, the Historic Area and the fire

This is the weekend for history-curious kids who don't want to spend it in the car.

  • Day 1: Arrive after 4 p.m., park at the door and let the kids claim bunks. Ride into the Historic Area for an evening walk along Duke of Gloucester Street, then come back for s'mores.
  • Day 2: On a Saturday or Sunday, start with coffee and the light continental breakfast in the lobby. Buy Historic Area tickets on the official Colonial Williamsburg site and spend the morning there. Head back to the room in the afternoon for downtime before the fire.

There's more in our guide to plan a Colonial Williamsburg family getaway.

The theme-park weekend: Busch Gardens and Water Country USA

This weekend runs on early starts and tired kids.

  • Day 1: Two showers mean four people can be out the door at opening time without a bathroom standoff. Spend the day at Busch Gardens Williamsburg. From mid-November through early January, Christmas Town runs on select dates.
  • Day 2: Water Country USA is seasonal, typically operating from late spring through September. Come back, rinse off in two bathrooms, and end the night at the firepit.

The history-forward weekend: Jamestown, Yorktown and the Capital Trail

This one suits families with older kids and a grandparent or two.

  • Day 1: Visit Jamestown, then ride a stretch of the Virginia Capital Trail. It's paved and starts right there. Pick a distance the youngest rider can finish.
  • Day 2: Drive to Yorktown, where the 1781 campaign ended, and tell the kids why the inn has the name it does.

If one grandparent would rather play a round, there's a Williamsburg golf weekend itinerary. Find more Williamsburg weekend itinerary ideas, or sign up for Williamsburg travel inspiration.

Visiting William & Mary with the whole family

Campus weekends rarely involve just one parent. Siblings come along, grandparents want to see the dorm, and everyone needs to be showered and dressed by the same morning deadline. The Family Suite handles that with the parents in the king room, the siblings in the bunk room and a bathroom on each side. Parking at the door means you won't spend graduation morning hunting for a spot.

Dates to put on the calendar:

  • Commencement 2027: May 20–22, 2027, with the main ceremony on the evening of Saturday, May 22.
  • Fall 2027: classes begin September 1, 2027, and fall break runs October 14–17.
  • Orientation, move-in, Family Weekend and Homecoming 2027: check the official William & Mary calendars as dates are posted, and see our guide to William & Mary Homecoming weekend.

Rochambeau has two Family Suites, so check availability once your campus date is fixed.

Family suites in Williamsburg, VA: frequently asked questions

These are the questions families ask most before booking. There are more answers in our frequently asked questions about your stay.

How many people can the Rochambeau Family Suite sleep?

Up to five guests. The suite combines a king room and a bunk room, which has a queen mattress on the lower level and a full-size mattress above. If you're traveling with an infant, ask about crib options when you book.

What beds are in the Family Suite?

There's one king bed in the adult room. The second room has one hand-crafted, built-in bunk with a queen mattress on the bottom and a full-size mattress on top. The king room's mattress is locally handcrafted in Norfolk by Paramount Sleep. Because both rooms have real beds, nobody has to make up a sofa bed at night.

Does the Family Suite have two bathrooms?

Yes. Each of the two connected rooms has its own en-suite bathroom with a tiled walk-in shower. Kids can get ready on their side while adults get ready on theirs, which helps on early theme-park mornings and campus weekends with a fixed start time.

Are the two rooms connected?

Yes. An interior passage connects the king room and the bunk room. The connection is part of the suite, so you aren't relying on a request for adjacent rooms. You book one suite and the whole crew stays together.

Is the Family Suite pet-friendly?

No. Dogs stay only in Classic Double rooms. The fee is $75 per dog per stay, with a maximum of two dogs, and certified ADA service dogs are exempt. Review our pet policy or read our guide to pet-friendly accommodations in Williamsburg.

Does the Family Suite have a kitchen or refrigerator?

It has a mini fridge, but no full kitchen. If you want to prepare food in the room, the General's Quarters has a kitchenette. If you plan to cook every meal, the comparison table above shows kitchen-led alternatives in Williamsburg.

Does Rochambeau have a pool or free breakfast?

A pool is not listed among Rochambeau's amenities. Complimentary hot coffee and a light continental breakfast are served in the lobby on Saturdays and Sundays only. It's not a daily hot breakfast. What the inn offers instead is complimentary bikes, an outdoor firepit, s'mores kits sold in the lobby, and free parking at your door.

How far is Rochambeau from Colonial Williamsburg and Busch Gardens?

Rochambeau sits on Capitol Landing Road at the gateway to Colonial Williamsburg, close enough to ride into the Historic Area on the complimentary guest bikes. Busch Gardens Williamsburg is a drive away, so plan to take the car on theme-park days and leave it parked at the door the rest of the time.

Is Rochambeau a good base for visiting William & Mary?

Yes, especially for family visits that need a shared setup. The Family Suite gives parents and siblings separate rooms and two bathrooms, and parking is at your door. Commencement 2027 runs May 20–22, so check suite availability once your dates are set.

What is the cheapest time to book a family trip to Williamsburg?

January and February are often quieter months in Williamsburg, but rates depend on the specific dates and local events. Check the Family Suite for your dates and compare totals directly.
